As part of their ongoing work on road safety, team Consumer VOICE organised a Cyclothon (Cycling for Road Safety) on 7 January 2017 to mark Road Safety Week. Flagged off at Nehru Park (Chanakyapuri), New Delhi, the theme of the Cyclothon was Child Safety and Safer Roads – Every Life Counts. The event was organised in association with Delhi Traffic Police.
The main objectives of the event were to a) create awareness on road safety aspects among masses and also to make them aware about their duties regarding achieving greater road safety in India, and b) demand for strong road safety laws from the government which would help in averting countless avoidable deaths and injuries due to road accidents.
The Cyclothon was flagged off by Satyender Jain, Transport and Health Minister, Delhi Government. On the occasion, he spoke about various road safety initiatives and schemes planned by the Delhi government, including felicitation of Good Samaritans helping road accident victims. The event saw the presence of Paralympic cyclist Jagwinder Singh and Abhay Damle, Joint Secretary, Transport, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Senior officers from Delhi Traffic Police also attended the event, as did common citizens.
Around 100 professional cyclists, wearing specially made t-shirts on the 'child safety' theme, participated in the Cyclothon and travelled back to their respective areas, thereby ensuring additional publicity.
